6 Exciting Interior Design Trends Appearing On TikTok

As the year begins, influencers and interior designers alike take to examining TikTok trends. The social media platform is so large and has such a cultural influence that even a single hashtag can dramatically change the industry, prompting homeowners across the world to adopt new colours or leave behind certain designs.

Here are six of the most exciting interior design trends already making waves on TikTok, those that look to define the year ahead.

Granny Chic

Sometimes referred to as grandmillenial, a term that will likely make those in their forties shudder, granny chic is an aesthetic style that celebrates the delicate floral designs of older generations. Pale colours are at the forefront here but aren’t left alone as with minimalist trends. Instead, they are embellished with a quiet decadence and vintage decor, such as chintz fabrics.

Barbiecore

The release of Barbie in 2023 had a significant impact on social media, prompting the colour pink to permeate almost every influencer palette. Now, within interior design, residents are celebrating Barbiecore, which can be best characterised as the pursuit of Barbie-inspired living spaces.

This doesn’t solely mean embracing the colour pink, although that is an essential part of the aesthetic. It can also mean bringing in bold and kitsch decor assets to a home, those that bring a sense of youthfulness and fun to a living space, just like on the sets of Gerwig’s film.

Biophilia

The pursuit of nature within interior design is becoming more popular than ever, with a great number of TikTokers asking the question: When does a living space become the outdoors? Amid this pursuit, homes are being styled to mimic favourite landscapes, from deep woodlands to ocean fronts. Gardens are also a key element of this aesthetic, with many naturecore enthusiasts embracing log cabins and outbuildings, so they can spend great time outdoors.

Maximalism

Rejecting the previous decade of minimalism, TikTok has begun largely in favour of the maximalist alternative. Here, eclectic and exciting clashes occur, as living spaces are filled with furniture, styles, and embellishments from across the decades, being celebrated for both their individual value and the collective quality they bring to a room.

Low Furniture

From sleeping mattresses being placed on the floor to sunken sofas and tatami mats, low living has made its way to the West with a great many influencers saying goodbye to raised furniture. While this is partly to imitate the traditional homes of Japan, it is also a way of making great use of space in small living areas. Residents who choose to lower their furniture then free their homes, increasing their potential for vertical design and storage.

Farmhouse

Refining the sprawl of cottagecore, farmhouse aesthetics bring a sense of rural living to homes without entirely filling them with twee fabrics. Farmhouse decor can be defined with a few simple assets, such as a pantry, wooden countertops, and cast iron embellishments for cupboards and doors. These rustic additions help to make a place feel more traditional and rural, celebrating the cosy style of rural life.
