Building kitchen cabinets yourself can save money and give you more control over the finished kitchen. It can also be one of those projects where a tiny measuring mistake turns into a very expensive problem.
A cabinet that is half an inch too wide may not fit beside the refrigerator. A countertop measured too short can leave an ugly gap. Put an upper cabinet at the wrong height, and your coffee maker may not even fit underneath it.

Before buying plywood, ordering doors, or cutting your first panel, take the time to measure the room carefully. Then measure it again.

1. Measure the Actual Wall Length

Kitchen walls are not always perfectly straight or square, especially in older homes. The distance between two walls can change slightly from the front to the back.
Measure the wall near the floor, around countertop height, and higher up where the wall cabinets will go.

Add a countertop of roughly 1 1/2 inches, and the finished work surface is usually close to 36 inches high.
You don’t have to follow that measurement in every custom kitchen, but you need to decide your finished height before building anything.
Think about the people who will actually use the kitchen.
A work surface that is too low can become uncomfortable during food preparation. One that is too high may make chopping, mixing, and cooking awkward.
Also check the height of nearby appliances.
Your dishwasher and range need to work with the final countertop height.
This is one measurement where you should think about the complete kitchen, not just the cabinet box.
4. Don’t Guess the Base Cabinet Depth
Many standard base cabinets are around 24 inches deep, not including the countertop overhang.
That doesn’t mean you should simply build every cabinet 24 inches deep.
Measure the room first.
A narrow kitchen may benefit from slightly shallower cabinetry in certain areas. A deep cabinet placed beside a doorway can interfere with the walking path.
Appliances matter too.
A refrigerator can already project farther into the room than the cabinets beside it. Adding unusually deep cabinetry can make a tight kitchen feel even tighter.

Walk around it.

Width, height, depth, required clearance, ventilation space, door swing, and connection locations.
Pay special attention to refrigerators.
A refrigerator may technically fit inside the opening but still have trouble opening fully because a wall or cabinet blocks the door.
The same problem can happen with dishwashers, ovens, and microwaves.
If you already own the appliance, measure it and compare your numbers with the manufacturer’s installation guide.

6. Measure Windows and Doors From the Trim

You need more than the basic window width.
Measure:
- Outside edge of trim to outside edge of trim
- Floor to bottom of window trim
- Floor to top of window trim
- Distance from the window to each nearby wall
- Distance from the window to planned cabinets
Why measure the trim?
Because that is often what your cabinets and countertop will actually come close to.
The same rule applies to doors.
Measure the complete door opening and trim. Then check which direction the door swings.
A beautifully built cabinet is not very useful if the kitchen door crashes into its handle every time someone enters.
7. Get the Sink Cabinet Measurements Right
The sink area deserves extra attention.
You have the cabinet box, sink, countertop opening, drain, water lines, and possibly a garbage disposal or water filtration system competing for the same space.
Start by choosing your sink.
Then check its full dimensions and installation requirements.
An undermount sink, farmhouse sink, and drop-in sink can require very different cabinet designs.
Farmhouse sinks are especially important to plan early because the front of the cabinet may need to be built specifically for the sink.
Also locate the plumbing.
Measure from a fixed point, such as a nearby wall, to the center of the drain and water supply lines.
Don’t rely on memory.
Write the numbers directly on your kitchen drawing.
8. Calculate the Space Between Countertop and Upper Cabinets
The space between your countertop and wall cabinets affects both appearance and daily use.
Around 18 inches is common in many kitchens, though your layout may call for something different.
Before choosing the height, think about what will live on the countertop.
Do you have a tall coffee machine?
A blender?
A stand mixer?
A large toaster oven?
Measure those items.

Imagine two cabinet runs meeting at 90 degrees.
Everything fits perfectly on paper.
Then you install the doors and discover that one handle hits the cabinet on the other wall.
This is why filler strips and door clearance matter.
Check how far each door and drawer needs to open.
For drawers, pull them out to their full extension.
For cabinet doors, imagine the complete swing.
Pay extra attention near:
- Inside corners
- Refrigerators
- Dishwashers
- Walls
- Door frames
- Large handles
- Pull-out storage
Sometimes leaving a small filler between a cabinet and wall solves several problems at once.
It may look like wasted space on the drawing, but that little gap can allow doors and drawers to operate properly.
Make a Simple Kitchen Measurement Drawing
You don’t need expensive design software to start.
Graph paper can work.
Draw the basic shape of the kitchen and add your measurements. Mark windows, doors, plumbing, electrical points, appliances, and vents.
Then create a second drawing showing the proposed cabinets.
Give every cabinet a width.
For example:
Wall length: 120″
3″ filler
+ 24″ drawer cabinet
+ 30″ range
+ 30″ base cabinet
+ 30″ sink cabinet
+ 3″ filler
= 120″
Now you can see exactly where every inch is going.
Do the same for the upper cabinets.
Don’t leave unexplained spaces on your plan. Every inch should have a purpose.
Measure Twice Is Not Enough
“Measure twice, cut once” is good advice.
For a kitchen, you can go further.
Measure once and write it down.
Measure again and compare.
Then check the important dimensions one final time before cutting expensive material.
Use the same reference points each time. If one measurement starts from drywall and another starts from trim, your numbers can become confusing very quickly.

Don’t Assume Your Kitchen Is Square

Your kitchen probably isn’t perfect.
A wall may lean slightly.
A floor may slope.
One corner may be 89 degrees instead of a perfect 90.

Use a long level to check floors and walls. Check corners with a square. Measure diagonally where needed.
Small gaps can often be handled with fillers, shims, trim, or scribing.
The goal isn’t to build cabinets for a mathematically perfect room.
It’s to build cabinets that fit your actual room.
